DESCRIPTION:HEROES\, Inc.®\, a 501c3\, supports the spouses and children of law enforcement officers and firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty to the greater Washington\, D.C. community. Our singular goal is to honor the supreme sacrifice made by these individuals by caring for their families. This support begins within 24 hours of the tragic loss and continues indefinitely. \nThe HEROES on the Run 5K will take place on the Hains Point 5K course located in Potomac Park\, Washington\, DC. Known for its smooth\, flat terrain\, the course winds along the scenic waterfront\, offering beautiful views of the Potomac River. This event\, hosted by the Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority\, Inc.® in collaboration with the Pearl and Ivy Educational Foundation\, Inc. (PIEF)\, honors the 40th anniversary of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority\, Inc.® founder Norma E. Boyd’s passing. \nNorma E. Boyd\, born on August 9\, 1888\, was a native Washingtonian dedicated to educational and humanitarian pursuits for children throughout her 97 years of life. She was an incorporator and founding member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority\, Inc.® and a charter member of the Xi Omega Chapter. \nSince 2013\, the Norma E. Boyd 5K Race for Education has raised over $118\,000\, directly supporting PIEF’s mission to provide college scholarships for District of Columbia high school students. \nAbout the Organizers: \nPIEF: Established in 1988\, PIEF is a 501(c)(3) organization providing scholarships to deserving college-bound high school seniors and continuing college students in the District of Columbia. Comprised of college-educated\, professional women and community volunteers\, PIEF serves as the fundraising arm and primary funder for the Xi Omega Chapter’s service programs. \nXi Omega Chapter\, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority\, Inc.®: As the oldest and largest graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority\, Inc.® in Washington\, D.C.\, Xi Omega boasts a rich history of community service and commitment to education over the past 100 years.
